The 1970s produced several surprise Pop Songs that highlighted the Babylonian Captivity of the Jews in 586 BC.

One was Don McLean’s Track “Waters of Babylon” in his Album “American Pie” (October 1971), a version of the 18th-century canon by Philip Hayes, 1737-1797.

The other was Rastafarian-song written by Brent Dowe and Trevor McNaughton of the Jamaican reggae group the Melodians in 1970. The lyrics were adapted from Psalms 19 and 37 of the Old Testament. The song was featured in the 1972 movie “The Harder They Come” directed by Perry Henzell, 1936-2006.

The group Boney M made a popular all-time Bubblegum classic of the song in 1978. It was officially a German group, although its members originated in Jamaica, Montserrat and Aruba.
