The Foundation Stone of Democracy
Burden of Proof
29 January 2026
In a democratic society, people have the freedom to believe in anything they want within the boundaries of the Law. It can be absolutely anything at all without literally any limits. But by the same token the right to put whatever claim exists must also be put to the critical test. This is allowed by the very same Law. Again, this rule-of-thumb applies to any subject matter imaginable.
Let’s take for one small example the subject matter of Flying Saucers. It rests upon literally two extremes. People either strongly believe in Flying Saucers, or they do not believe in them at all. People either think about them all the time, or people don’t think about them at all.
It is only natural for someone who would like to believe in Flying Saucers to have at least one piece of evidence for their existence. Believers in Flying Saucers claim to be surrounded by proof everywhere.
On the other hand, there are people who do not wish to believe in Flying Saucers simply because there is no proof whatsoever for their existence.
The onus of proof of existence will always rest with the believers. The believers must supply evidence for their position. It is not up to the disbelievers if evidence is lacking. The disbelievers can only be fairly challenged if the proof exists in the first place. Believers cannot just simply believe in anything “just because they want to believe” – otherwise that would be called “faith” – belief without proof – and that falls within the Domain of Religion.
It has recently been alleged (since 1982) that there is a “Jesus Bloodline ” – people must verify that as fact. To date, they have been unable to do that. There is no doubt at all that this subject matter has captured the public imagination and that belief in it has become highly popular. But it exists without any evidence.
Likewise, it has recently been alleged (since the mid 1950s) that the Abbé Bérenger Saunière in the French village of Rennes-le-Château “discovered something” that made him immensely rich. The same results and the same required proof are required for that to be turned into a fact.
To date, the believers have ultimately failed to find any evidence for “Flying Saucers”, the “Jesus Bloodline” or to the “discovery by Abbé Bérenger Saunière” that was responsible for his wealth.
There is a lot of searching and rooting around by the believers, without finding one piece of evidence to sustain their respective positions of belief. So far, all three claims can only be described as wishful thinking.
