Was it Cybele, the goddess of initiates, for whom he had a particular devotion (in Madrid, he never failed to take off his hat when passing in front of her statue erected on one of the city's squares); or else was it Saint Catherine of Alexandria, patroness of hermetic philosophers; or even the Beatrice whom Dante equates with the number 9; or this esoteric Church to which he was linked? All of that at once, perhaps. Be that as it may, it was a great sorrow for me to lose it one evening upon returning from Paris, so that I will not be able to transmit it in my turn, which seems to signify that the work will not be continued, except in the hearts of a few.

Que représentait cette figure féminine? Etait-ce Cybèle, la déesse des initiés, pour laquelle il avait une particulière dévotion (à Madrid il ne manquait pas de se découvrir, en passant devant sa statue érigée sur une des places de la ville); ou bien était-ce Sainte Catherine d’Alexandrie, patronne des philosophes hermétiques; ou encore la Béatrix que Dante assimile au nombre 9; ou cette Eglise ésotérique à laquelle il se rattachait? Tout cela à la fois peut-être. Quoiqu’il en soit, ce fut pour moi une grande douleur de la perdre un soir en rentrant de Paris, de telle sorte que je ne pourrai la transmettre à mon tour, ce qui semble signifier que l’oeuvre ne sera pas continuée sauf dans le coeur de quelques-uns.
