The local press were not so gullible during the early 1960s about the subject matter. It only slowly developed into becoming a lot softer and began advertising the nonsense once it realised it was becoming responsible for attracting tourism to the area and providing much needed income to the local commune of Rennes-le-Château. It’s quite laughable when you compare the attitudes of the local gendarmerie towards Abbé Bérenger Saunière of the late 19th century with what is acceptable today!

What is happening in the subject matter of Rennes-le-Château is actually no different to what is happening in many other pseudo-historical subject matters that have equally obstinate and unyielding attitudes, again devoid of any historical support. Belief for belief’s sake. Nothing more.

There is a category of people who are psychologically blind to this process of behaviour. This includes people from all walks of life – showing that it has nothing to do with either educational or class background. It can include anyone from a Senator to a Trash Collector. Anyone can suffer from this ailment. All we can do is to sigh a huge amount of relief that such people only represent a small fraction of our society.
