Rennes-le-Château – Groundhog Day Again

18 November 2025

First and foremost, there is nothing unique about Abbé Bérenger Saunière – there is NO SCHOLARSHIP about the priest – the priest never occupied a “unique place in modern French cultural and historical imagination” – this is merely the spamming of the websites and the books of the Believers and nothing else. These webmasters and authors have got an axe to grind to keep the “mystery” of Rennes-le-Château going, to advertise the existence of a “treasure”, a “mystery” and a “secret”. There is a vast intensity to preserve the memory and the jumbled-esoterica of Philippe de Chérisey, a proved fraudster, also to excavate an alleged “treasure” of Rennes-les-Bains that no serious historian takes seriously.

So far, no professional archaeologist has been interested in the subject matter of Rennes-le-Château – with the exception of Robert Eisenman, someone who has created oddball subjective theories about James the Just and Christianity. Whenever the Believers tried to get an archaeological group to become interested in the subject matter, it is without any success and they are “laughed out of the room”. Try getting the French Ministry of Culture to be interested.

The essays and articles found on the Believers websites and in their books are not objective, but heavily biased towards into promoting the pseudo-babble of believing that there is something special about Rennes-le-Château, Abbé Henri Boudet's book and his brothers map, and Philippe de Chérisey's nonsensical ramblings – and Philippe de Chérisey's correspondence exists from the 1960s showing that he was doing it all for fun and laughs in order to prop-up his friend and buddy, Pierre Plantard, another known fraudster, whose questionable practices of [poor] deception came to an end in 2002 when he was investigated by the French Police (again).

The Believers are always guilty of tactless and embarrassing behaviour EVERY TIME they mention things like “the figure of Abbé Bérenger Saunière has occupied a unique place in modern French cultural and historical imagination”, when in fact what they should be saying is that the subject matter is made-up-rubbish that is only fit for the scrap-heap. If only the Abbé Bérenger Saunière could rise from the grave! He would burst out laughing at such nonsense!

I have mentioned previously how the Believers cannot keep quiet and are quite unable to control their addictions. Their repetitive habit of continuously, for decades, to repeat the same old mistaken stories is just like “Groundhog Day” – the situation of an ENDLESS series of unwelcome or tedious articles, books and websites that continuously appear to be recurring in exactly the same way for decades upon decades.
