Yet Another Saunière Treasure Book!
2 October 2025
The latest book by Florence Cazebon-Taveau, entitled “Le Livre des Merveilles” (2025) can easily be discredited by pointing out her most basic mistake when she quotes from Abbé Saunière's Diary for 21 September 1891, “Discovery of a tomb” – this can equally be a reference to the discovery of the tomb of Marie de Negre d'Ables, by the workmen digging the foundations beneath Saunière's Office.
The interpretation of the Shepherds’ Huts in the area (all well documented), using them as a link to a “treasure” is farcical in the extreme. Especially since nobody has proved the existence of a “treasure” since the myth was created by Noël Corbu during the mid-1950s and does not date from any earlier period of time. Everything begins during the mid 1950s.
All in all, Florence Cazebon-Taveau's book has been written for the believers in the fantasy of Abbé Saunière's “treasure” that I am sure will be sold well to the Tourists making their annual pilgrimages to the village of Rennes-le-Château. Not the type of Pilgrimages that Abbé Saunière would have ever hoped for or welcomed, because nobody can PROVE that the Abbé ever discovered a treasure.
There is hope for Pinocchio – he was changed from being a piece of wood to a human being by finally telling the truth.
